Nationwide survey reveals the popularity of keeping it local

Two recent research surveys have put independent local service and repair garages in pole position for service and value.

The latest survey, by independent website www.honestjohn.co.uk questioned 1200 mainly private motorists, 65 per cent of whom rated local independents as likely to provide the best service.

Seventy-seven per cent said they use the same garage every time they need their car serviced because they know and trust them.

The marketing manager of independent service and repair network myFavouriteGarage.com, believes this is down to the fact that local independents have had to work hard to build a good reputation with each customer who drives onto their forecourt.

He said: “This survey, and a similar one carried out by consumer organisation ‘Which?’ earlier in the year, both show how much private motorists like to build a relationship of trust with their service garage.”

“It’s not surprising that local independents have come out on top in this regard, because private motorists are the lifeblood for our businesses. We have had to make sure that we offer the service that individuals want, at a price they find affordable, and to make sure we are accountable for everything we do.

“Private motorists are not tied to a particular service provider, so we can only keep them loyal by giving them what they want.

“Independents stand or fall by their local reputation.”

myFavouriteGarage.com network members retain their independence but they have signed up to a recognised code of practice, and can also offer a National Warranty, which means that work is guaranteed for 12 months and parts can be replaced if faulty, either at the original garage or at another myFavouriteGarage.com member’s premises if this is more convenient.
myFavouriteGarage.com has a phone booking hotline and an online booking service that enables customers to book direct with their nearest member garages, and at no cost, saving them the mark-up charged by third party online booking services.
He said: “Our members know it is vital to have robust management systems and to have independent accreditations that demonstrate a commitment to quality, and help local people to feel confident when they choose us.”
