The Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) has published the test data for the first time, following a Freedom of Information request from the BBC, and a ruling by the Information Commissioner that disclosure is in the public interest.
The myFavouriteGarage.com marketing manager said: “A quick look at the statistics shows that cars and vans are failing because of simple things such as worn brakes, steering or suspension problems, and lighting and signaling faults.
“These are all things that would be addressed if the car or van was being maintained according to its service schedule, by trained technicians.
“Routine maintenance is far cheaper in the long-run than remedial work, and it means that the vehicle can stay where it belongs - on the road.”
The data published by VOSA relates to 2007 vehicle tests. Figures for 2008 and 2009 will be available later this year, and myFavouriteGarage.com says it will be interesting to see how the recession has affected MOT test failure rates.
He said: “A number of commentators have suggested that motorists have cut back on routine servicing and maintenance to reduce costs.
“It is a false economy, and we expect this to show up in the next sets of MOT test failure figures.”
myFavouriteGarage.com estimates that replacing worn brake pads on schedule will cost the driver around £40 to £80 for high quality parts and labour, depending on the vehicle model. Leaving them unchanged could spell disaster if the car is unable to stop quickly in an emergency, and could also end up costing three times as much, as damage to brake disks caused by not changing the pads on time would mean these also need replacing.
The MOT test failure statistics can be found at on the VOSA website.
