Stories abound about poorly prepared motorists coming unstuck for the simplest reason - one customer broke down in February on his way back from the airport after a sunny holiday abroad wearing T-shirt, shorts and flip-flops! Don’t become another statistic, be sensible.

• Ice-scraper and de-icer (aerosol or trigger)
• Small torch
• Warning triangle and reflective jacket
• Jump leads
• Towrope
• First aid kit

Most car glove boxes can hold a few extra items such as spare light bulbs, fuses and even a roll of PVC electrical tape - useful for making temporary repairs to electrical connections, split water hoses, fuel pipes and cracked light covers.
