Motorway hard shoulders are for emergency use only
You should only stop if it is a really necessary emergency and there is no other choice. Try to drive to a safer place off motorway rather than stopping on the hard shoulder.
Pull on to the hard shoulder and stop as far to the left as possible, wheels turned to the left, sidelights and hazard flashers on; use the left-hand door, leave animals in the vehicle if possible; wear a reflective jacket; do not use a reflective triangle.
Get everyone out of the vehicle and move behind the barrier or up the embankment if at all possible.
Call for assistance once you are in a safe place, either by mobile or by utilising one of the emergency roadside phones.
If you are prevented from following these guidelines due to a disability stay in the vehicle, use your hazard warning lights and if you have a car or mobile telephone call the emergency services.
If you can’t get to the hard-shoulder
Don’t try to use a warning device on the carriageway, use your hazard warning lights and only leave your vehicle if or when you can safely get clear of the carriageway.

Use your hazard warning lights, particularly if your vehicle is causing an obstruction, but get your vehicle as far off the road as you are able. Wear a reflective jacket.
Get all your passengers out of the car, well away from the traffic if you think your vehicle may be hit; is it safe for you to fix the car or do you need professional help?
Use your warning triangle and keep your sidelights on if it is dark or visibility is poor.
Use your mobile phone, or any other available phone, to summon assistance, making sure you know where you have broken down!
